I don't normally do many memes, but [livejournal.com profile] bigfatmama ordered me to do it, and I do normally follow orders. I mean, not in the wartime way.

1) Total number of books owned?

Way too many to count. One tall bookshelf plus three short wide bookshelves and I'm spilling out of them and techinically I have even more books in storage in my parents house. I'm hoping to make a purge soon though.

2) The last book I bought?

Jean Genet's The Thief's Journal for 2 bucks and Jonathan Ames's The Extra Man for 1 buck!

3) The last book I read?

Meditations in Green by Stephen Wright (not the standup comic). I read the last half of it on the plane on the way home form SF. It was okay. It's a book about a Vietnam vet, going between his experience during his tour of duty and the final blowout that ends it then flashing to his present struggles with being back. The most interesting parts were about plants, because he was a "botanist" in the war who worked on the Agent Orange stuff and when he comes back he's seeing plants everywhere and then he starts planting plants all through his apartment.

The book I'm currently reading is The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne by Brian Moore which is fan-fucking-tabulous.

4) 5 books that mean a lot to me?

A Home At the End of the World -- Michael Cunningham. Because after getting burned out by books in college, this brought be back to reading fiction for pleasure and exploring contemporary writers. And it's pretty.

Lolita -- Vladmir Nabokov. Because it's literary genius even if I feel cliche for saying so.

Tomorrow In the Battle Think On Me -- Javier Marias. Because it saved my life this semester by renewing faith in fiction and myself as a writer.

Mrs. Dalloway -- Virginia Woolf. Because it's literary genius, even if I feel cliche for saying so.

Zami -- Audre Lorde. Because it's gut wrenching and beautiful and eye-opening and was the first to validate my queerness in a personal way even though it's kind of ridiculous to think about now since I'm not anywhere near her identity. But I suppose it's just a testimony to how good it is at capturing the outsider story.

It's a good thing I got this meme now, because I love books again. A few months ago I was hating books.
Back to work.....
