I teach in the health classroom of the high school and there's a television and VCR permanently in the room (though unfortunately no collection of classic health films for us to view). Yesterday, while waiting for all the students and my co-teacher to show up, a group of kids was gathered around the TV watching Jerry Springer. I asked them if they were ready to go to the cafeteria for 3rd meal, and one of them said they wanted to see first if there would be any Jerry Beads.
"What are Jerry Beads?"
After being teased for not knowing anything about the Jerry Springer Show, they explained that when someone on the show lifts up their shirt and bares their breasts, they get Jerry Beads.
"Oh, like Mardi Gras," I said.
"What's that?" I don't know who said it, but they all looked at me expectedly.
"You don't know what Mardi Gras is?"
They all shook their head and gave blank stares.
So because I couldn't just say "a celebratory (and debaucherous) parade associated with New Orleans", I gave a whole lesson on Lent and Ash Wednesday and Fat Tuesday and parades, as well as how it connects to Jerry Beads.
And now I know they can't say they didn't learn something at Raw Works.
