I've crash landed today, back home for real, trying to get things adjusted which mostly means hiding out from the world. Then I decided I needed a date with myself so I picked up some things at the store to cook dinner and finished off an open bottle of wine from the back of the pantry and watched Junebug while I ate. Loved it. Some movies are novels, where they create entire worlds, universes, and invite us in and teach us the rules and take us for a ride. Some movies are short stories, where they show small slices of How It Is, or at least How It Feels. The movie is one of the latter, about going home to family, which is quite popular now, but it's primarily through the eyes of the family and the outsider wife, not the son coming home, and given my own in-law experiences, parts of it really resonated. On top of that, the movie is a surprising depiction of white middle class south, that felt authentic and not caricature, without romanticizing either.
I forget I am a lightweight and by the end of the movie I got a little too buzzed than I wanted to be at the late late hour of 8 pm, so I spent an hour cleaning out songs from my computer while also downloading versions of "Softly and Tenderly" (this will make sense if you see the movie, and by the way, that whole scene with the church dinner? Been there, totally know all those people, including the pastor). I listened to a lot of bad versions of 'Softly and Tenderly' but found one that completely wrenched my heart and it was fcking Jeff Tweedy. Damn. I'm also trying to find a very specific version of "Colors" (or "Colours"?) that is not Donovan. The one I want is old and scratchy with simple guitar and has a primarily male vocal with a female harmonizing, in case there's anyone out there reading this who knows their american bluegrass/country/folk music and wants to tip me off.
It's funny when I go through these manic music phases, because I end up with playlists that have "All Cried Out" next to "All My Trials". Unrequited love, Jesus, whatever.
