Last night I finally got to scratch "eat pizza" off my to-do list, because I've been craving it for over a week, and the few times I had opportunities, it was just too hot. While getting takeout pizza alleviates the feeling of "its too hot to prepare food" it doesn't quite jibe with the whole "its too hot to eat, much less eat something that's above my body temperature". I totally just had to stop and look up jibe in the dictionary because my brain suddenly lapsed, much like this morning when I wasn't sure I knew what extant mean. I did have it right, I just didn't trust myself, and it's just weird when your thinking falls out from under you in an unexpected way.

We went to see a production of Medea at the Chopin Theatre and right before the show I read most of the play. It's very short, or maybe I'm becoming a faster reader. Probably both. The show started off kinda rickety, the performances were way too histrionic coming out of the gate -- I mean, it's a Greek tragedy that starts off mid-crisis and only escalates from there and there's lots of deception and scheming and yelling and murdering. You can't sustain that isht for 90 minutes. You still have to build up to it. Or maybe that's just how I would direct it. But anyway, the actress playing Medea had a great presence and there were two other skilled performers, including the actor playing Jason, who also was deaf. It was an interesting staging that incorporated ASL throughout, and it played an interesting part in the dynamic, not so much between husband and wife, but between the parents and kids who were literally put in the middle and forced to translate. So even though there were lots of weak and sometimes painful performances, and the copious amounts of fake blood required was very fake-looking, the strong leads and innovative ideas made it compelling and enjoyable in the end. Not that this review matters for convincing people to see it, because the show closes tonight.

I'm leaving soon for a DJ gig in Oak Park. It will be long and occasionally taxing, though not necessarily hard, but it's for an old friend and the money will be good and needed because my temp gig for last week got cancelled. Which, I almost don't mind, because on Friday I went downtown to the Roosevelt library and worked for 3 hours on my novel, then I went to the library and picked up some books for research (which, by the way, I fcking love this concept and freedom it brings to read all sorts of random and crazy isht). So even though I will be running a tight ship moneywise, I'm happy to have lots of time to read and write and work on random craft and art projects. Speaking of, if you love Barbra a lot in practice, not just theory, e-mail me your mailing address and you will get a surprise [raymondboywonder-AT-yahoo-dot-com]. Assuming 100 people don't e-mail me, but c'mon, I'm talking REAL Babs fans, who know lyrics to songs. If you just want mail, e-mail me and tell me that and I'll see what I can do.
