Notes on a Scandal was pretty much as delicious and entertaining as I hoped, which that seems to rare, that I go into something with expectations (in this case, something trashy and fun and well-acted and entertaining and satisfying, though nothing life-changing or mind-blowing) and they get matched. ( minor spoilers )
I'm always intrigued by the concept of constant diarists, perhaps because I am sort of one, a lazy one who only occasionally gets it down on a page (this reminds me of the Hal Hartley movie I almost showed at film group, Amateur when he says, "how can you be a nymphomaniac who doesn't have sex?" and she answers, "I'm choosy."). So anyway, this movie has a new favorite diary entry opening*: "Bliss!" Also, the phrase "another gold star day" and the meticulous application of actual gold stars to the diary. Loved it. I actually almost want to read the book because the movie had lots of voiceovers, which is a pet peeve of mine, but I let them get away with it because they were so damn funny and I suspect they were probably all prose taken from the novel.
It is Monday and yesterday was such a lovely day and I slept well last night, but still, I woke up and it was hard and I am trying to Get It TogetherTM with only limited success. This would not be a gold-star day. Though there's still time, I suppose.
* It's still only my number-two favorite, it has not de-throned the number one favorite diary entry opening which, hands down, is still: "Dear log, I am me again!" [Courtesy of Lisa Simpson, if you don't know.]
