Its Monday morning, its grey, I'm underslept because I was a little hyper last night and probably didn't fall asleep until 1 am or so, then got up shortly after 6 and have been in a groggy fog since. I still managed to make breakfast, I managed to change my morning plans which originally were to be biking the 10 miles up to Evanston to do some freelance work except its supposed to rain. So instead I think I will bike a few blocks to the library and get a movie and do the boring data entry part of work here, and some writing, and some reading, and general laidback rainy day Monday type things instead.

But first, I had to come here because I just saw the most infuriating and amazing news story for the 15 seconds I had the television on (you know, between stopping the porn tape and hitting the power off button): apparently, yesterday marked the one year anniversary of the Chicago department store Marshall Field's becoming Macy's, and there was a protest downtown with marchers and signs and a person with a bullhorn, trying to get the store to change back. There was a protest. A protest. I can't believe this was real so I googled "Marshall Fields protest" and the first link was to http://www.fieldsfanschicago.org/ which is the organization behind this great political maneuvering. Please expect to see this organization mentioned in a State of the Union address by the President as evidence of how great a nation we are to support free speech and difference of opinion because we are trying to solve the social problem of department store identities. For real? No really, for real? Because I could see this whole thing as a performance art piece about particular aspects of our culture. I mean, I'm not criticizing having an opinion or idea on the issue. I'm all about us being complicated people with complicated ideas and holding lots of thoughts at the same time, you don't have to choose to have your brain tuned to one station at a time, whether it's "Iraq war" or "they discontinued my favorite brand of coffee at the grocery store". We can think it all at once. But a protest? With signs and marching and....

It's 8:30 am and I think I need a fcking drink.
