And now what we're really all here for: pop culture and food.

On Friday night I hung out with [livejournal.com profile] vfc and we watched three hours of television in five hours, because we have to pause frequently to deconstruct. I mean, we talk while watching too, but sometimes one of us needs to go a bit more in depth. It started with an episode of the Nickelodeon show "Yo Gabba Gabba" which [livejournal.com profile] unscrambled had recommended to me, and friends of Liza's had recommended to her. After approximately 83 seconds, we were hooked. I wish I could remember all of the songs, or hell even all of our commentary, but I do remember these parts.

Liza: Yeah, right after Sean Lennon's kid was born, he probably called up Miho Hatori and said, remember your DJ friend Lance? I got this idea......
Ray: Yeah, DJ Lance was totally a raver DJ.
Liza: Was?

Ray: (said while examining a chip, just dipped in a tub) "Hummus, do you wanna go to the party in my tummy?"

Oh wait, here, go see for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9PqjMSNfkU

Then we watched R. Kelly's Trapped in the Closet. All 22 episodes. 90 minutes. Liza said no one had been able to go the distance, but I committed. And I can't exactly say it was 'worth it', but it was somewhat amazing. Also amazing, that after an hour and a half of a hip-hopera, it was TO BE CONTINUED. All I kept thinking (and saying) was: imagine being in a creative meeting with R. Kelly and hearing him make pitches and brainstorm.

Then we watched Flight of the Conchords, which has become our tradition. I really love that show and want them to be my boyfriends.

Except, we finally started watching Heroes in our house, and my love for Greg Gunberg has also returned, so there's lots of competition these days for being my pretend husband.

Speaking of New Zealand, I bought a pinot noir from a region where I usually prefer sauvignon blancs, and I mostly got it because a) it was under $15, b) it had a screw top (I was taking it to Ravinia and knew I wouldn't drink it all alone, so wanted it to be recloseable), and c) was recommended by the same person as Sam's Wine Discount center who recommended this other french wine I loved. The Marlborough pinot noir was pretty light and tasty, I drank some on Saturday night while eating pears and blue cheese and prosciutto and carrots and hummos and dark chocolate, and then I drank the rest last night during our 4-episode Heroes marathon. With popcorn. Have you had red wine and popcorn? It is a stellar combo.

Yesterday I met Ms. Rook at R. J. Grunt's in Lincoln Park. A strange choice of restaurant, I know, but I had a $25 gift card for a "Lettuce Entertain You" restaurant, and the choices for those are pretty limited to either overpriced middling 'asian' fare or big fancy steakhouses. This place was kinda like a local Bennigans mixed with Billy Goat's and then squared to a ridiculous degree. BUT, the burgers were actually really fantastic. Who knew? And they had homemade chips, which are currently my favorite -- I started getting them at Kuma's, and this place was equally as good. And at the end of the meal, we only had to pay $2 each.

Then we walked up to Landmark and saw The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters. It was a total whim, Ms. Rook was a bit skeptical about the topic, but in the end, we both enjoyed it. I fcking love movies/documentaries about people who are really into isht. I've been wanting to re-watch Fast, Cheap, and Out of Control and this might finally compel me to bump it to the top of the rental queue.
