Omg, music. I forgot. How did I forget?

So on Saturday evening, I was out on my bike with DYA and had the time, the money, and the inclination to actually do something out of my house. I was leaning towards seeing Eastern Violence, but then on a total blind whim, I went to an early show at Schuba's to see this band based on the mini-write up in the Reader. I don't usually go to concerts, and in fact, I kinda loathe them at times, but really its just that I have no tolerance for bad or mediocre ones.

I got there before doors opened and had a drink at the bar and overheard a great conversation between the bartender and a patron about the history of the place. Then I joined all the college kids in the back room. I was seriously the oldest person in the room besides the staff for awhile. The waitress seemed really glad to see me, though I suppose if I'm one of only a few in a wristband, you go with your only options.

The opening band was like this strange cross of Rilo Kiley and L7, and not necessarily in a bad way, until the guitarist and bassist switched instruments and mics and the bassist was painfully painfully bad as a singer. I thought ok, whatever, one song. No, they did 4 like that. Then they were gone, and the headliners came on stage and took awhile to tune up and twiddle their instruments. At this point, I'd moved up to the front of the stage, only about 5 feet away from the two guys. Waiting and waiting and waiting, and not really minding, they were cute to watch fidget around, and then suddenly right before the show started, I turned around and realized the entire place had filled in behind me. I think it sold out. I turned back around and stayed that way, knowing if I looked into the crowd for too long, I'd start to get agitated, but if I kept them on my back and looked at the cute blond guy with a beard and amazing guitar skills, I'd be just fine. And I was, and afterwards, I felt a bit like I drank the kool-aid, I was a little in love with this band.

But I was also extremely fascinated with its following, with its popularity among this specific crowd and what it means and why. Especially this song in the clip, which is very sort of outlaw folk song in a I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die way, but what does it mean that these are contemporary songs like this, versus just a revisiting of an older song form by covering such songs? But this youtube footage cracked me up to, because everyone in these scenes where they're playing in basements looked just like all the people standing around me last night.

I biked home afterwards in 15 minutes flat, because I caught EVERY light. I never stopped pedalling or came to a stop the entire length of Belmont to the house. I thought maybe it was supposed to mean something, until I realized, it was just the sake of experiencing that ride itself. It didn't really matter when I got home, the dog was the only one there and she has no sense of time at all. I spent the next couple hours downloading tons of music, and then went to bed listening to Bones-Thugs-N-Harmony. I don't know why exactly. I have this friend who LOVES them so much, and its sort of unexpected, you wouldn't probably peg her at all for being a rabid fan of them, and frankly, I don't get it. Sure, they have a few singles I like but overall, I'm just what? For real? This?

Today thought what I've listened to most is Pharoahe Monch's Desire (which sounds like a strange brilliant cross between what OutKast's Idlewild and R. Kelly's Trapped in the Closet could have been if produced by Prince Parul and Dan the Automator, but trust me, like in an amazing way). And my new favorite discovery: Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. Don't make me slice you, cause I'm fast.
