I have changed the layout of my journal for the first time in years. And I didn't change it back right away. I think I'm finally ready to join 2002. It helped that I found a background that was dark (I prefer reading livejournal with white text on a dark color, for some reason) and it's an urban skyline at sunset with powerlines.

My trip to Los Angeles was great, but so short, almost like an intense dream I had a few days ago but still haven't shaken off. It felt sort of unresolved in some ways, because of the brevity, but it might also be because I spent 4 days straight with a mild headache and sneezing caused by allergies, so the constant low-dose benadryl/ibuprofen made me a bit out of it for most of my trip. I still managed to see lots of people and have great laughs and conquer a fear of lobsters I didn't even realize I had until the live creature was in my hand, flapping its tail around. We had surf-n-turf on Thursday, a nontraditional Thanksgiving meal for our nontraditional family, though really, when we're all together, it feels pretty natural and easy and loving which is actually what the so-called traditions represent. Katrina said, "I think Thanksgiving is our holiday" and we all agreed -- it involves eating a lot and drinking wine. And playing songs for each other off of our ipods. And eating mexican food the next day. And playing the Bill Tankovich game, and the Settlers of Catan game, and the "Good Game" game, which the last one isn't really a game as much as a chance to smack asses. Or at least, these are all the traditions in this branch of my family.

As delicious as the steak and clarified butter-dipped crustaceans were, I was a little sad to not have turkey and dressing and cranberry and all of those starchy favorites, except I got back to Chicago at midnight on Friday and [livejournal.com profile] dommeyourass told me the story of her successful turkey cooking and dinner at our house and it ended with me eating a big pile of leftovers that night before bed. I had another plate yesterday for dinner. And one today for brunch. So I am sated all around.

Yesterday afternoon I went to see No Country for Old Men with friends, including coffee afterwards to process it. Then last night DYA and I went over to [livejournal.com profile] keetbabe's for dessert and scrabble. It was great to connect with Chicago people this weekend too, but this morning I woke up and realized, whoa, after five days in a row, I could use some large chunks of time of total quiet. I went to temple this morning, and I didn't even bring a book or an ipod for the walk and bus ride.
