When I had lunch with [livejournal.com profile] mintwaster a couple weeks ago, she mentioned me being on the 'hospital list' for [livejournal.com profile] robobebe and I was like, sure, sure of course, thinking that meant "the list of people [livejournal.com profile] cocolola calls if she needs a ride to the hospital". Then on Monday when I ran into her in the post office, she clarified, no, I mean, IN the hospital, like actually present. And I got so excited all over again, almost like I just learned about the baby. I'm so ready to meet this kid that the next day when I got a text from Cocolola, my first thought was ITS HAPPENING, but it turns out she was wondering if I wanted to meet her at IHOP.

Today was the third annual Lunch-at-Ada's,Dessert-at-Walnut-Room-Under-the-Christmas-Tree with my friend Corrie. I got my shopping done too, which was fairly easy since [livejournal.com profile] dommeyourass and I aren't exchanging gifts, we are going to see a play at Steppenwolf on Saturday night (starring Gil Grissom! (aka William Peterson)) as our joint gift to each other, and for Xmas itself, her family now swaps names, so I only had to buy one gift for Grandma and I already knew what it was going to be. We stood in a terrifically long line at TJ Maxx but managed to not go crazy because we could chat with each other and just pretend it wasn't happening. Everytime I buy something there, which is probably 2-3 times a year, I always have these hilarious encounters with the checkout clerks, for such a taxing job, they are remarkably amiable and fun to riff with. Afterwards while walking over to Daley Center, and talking about random Chicago news and bits, I said that I was really really really hoping we do NOT get picked for the Olympics, and she suggested that perhaps the Blagojevich arrest will hurt the cause. I hope that will be a true insight.

Last night I went on a date to Hideout and saw DKV Trio perform, and during the second set Fred Anderson joined them, and it was just so oustanding. I don't go out to live music much, and I've seen very little live jazz in my life, which is sad given that I live in Chicago and there are opportunities there to take, and last night I did. My date was equally enthralled by the music, and we bopped and swayed as we wanted, as well as got a little a touchy-feely, both of these things made us stand out a little amongst the cool jazz kids. We didn't get any dirty looks or anything, or maybe we did but I didn't notice at all, we were in our own bubble. Afterwards we walked to Hollywood Diner and split cheese sticks and I had a BLT. Which is also what I had today at Ada's for lunch.

One thing I liked about going to L.A. for two weeks twice a year is that getting to know a second city also gave me an opportunity to really appreciate Chicago, both as a city and as my adopted home. This week, between the gorgeous first full snowfall, the interactions with my friends and neighbors, the landscapes and dive bars, the outings, I'm feeling especially warm towards the city of big shoulders, even though I have no idea what that means. I should go google it right now. Oh yeah, the Carl Sandburg poem. I could probably find a similiar entry from a few years back. Maybe this time the info will stick.
