What is it about bathrooms that make them cosmic birthing whirlpools of epiphanies and new ideas? I think every good idea I've ever had in my entire life came in the shower, in the bath, sitting on the toilet, or washing my hands.

The bathroom is where the Muse lives. No, really. When I'm struggling through a nasty part of something I'm writing, I take a shower. I spent much of NaNoWriMo 2002 sitting in the (dry) bathtub with my laptop, because it was the only place I could write.

I could probably work up something wanky about feng shui and the flowing properties of water, but honestly? I think it's because there are fewer distractions in there to occupy your monkey mind.

During his visit, T and I were talking about showering with lovers, and about how it's so tricky, and I think the bathroom muse is related to the cliched yet true idea that we discussed--the bathroom is the only place where you're ever alone. I agree, a good percentage of my good ideas happen in there. Also, right before bed/right when awakening.

I came down pretty strongly on the "no, my butt is cold enough as it is" side, but there is a certain potential for different intimacy in a mutual shower.

I did NaNoWriMo in 2002!!! But I didn't do it in the bathroom. I did 2/3 of it at work.
