I never thought I would ever say this, but I'm really burnt out on red wine, cheese and dried meats. And maybe chocolate too. It's a little intense and I don't quite know what to do with myself about this, though I'm sure it will fade and soon I will be back to my old self.

It is strange to think that 12 hours ago I was waking up in L.A. and stumbling out of bed in the dark to the shower, got in a rental car, went to the airport, sat on a plane for over three hours and watched a bad movie, and now I'm back, not just here in Chicago but sitting at the desk in my office, as if the last four days were a hash-infused dream. It's not impossible, I guess, given my near constant exposure to the secondhand smoke that was coming from a Thanksgiving attendee/houseguest who was a friend-of-a-friend. That isht is potent.

It was a bit of a whirlwind trip, that really felt like just enough time to share one meal and one conversation with a few of the people I love in L.A. Every trip I feel I swear the next one will be longer, but that hasn't been able to happen yet. Next year though, for real, as I am now employed with more access to income, but also because Jet Blue is starting cheap service from O'Hare in 2007.

I was almost alarmed at how warm and muggy it is here in Chicago. It is not the late November I have come to expect and in fact is nearly the same weather as L.A., though they had sunshine and twice I was able to drive around in my rental convertible (free upgrade!) with the top down and successfully battle all the demons brought on my grey clouded light. I think maybe a trip back in February. And this time a more intensive writing retreat.

It is almost December and this will be the first December in three years that I have not gone away for two weeks to my writer's residency. For the first time, I feel truly sad to have graduated.
