There's a handful of people at work who I genuinely like and have fun conversations with, and today I said to one of them (because I'm wearing at work the same thing I've been wearing all day -- seersucker long shorts, t-shirt, sneakers, which is probably going to be almost the same thing I wear tomorrow, too): "in case you are wondering, these aren't shorts [which are prohibited by office dress code], these are capri pants." and she said, "ma-pri pants?" and I said, "how about man diggers?"

Speaking of terms for the various forms of shorts and short pants, as a child, my mom would often supplement my wardrobe with handsewn clothes, partly as her hobby, partly as a money saver, and she always would try and push me to wear the culottes she sewed for me, and I just couldn't do it, even with my propensity for people-pleasing, sucking-it-up skills, I had some limits. And it was those culottes. I have some regrets in life. My refusals are not part of them.

what about culottes, matching vests and patent leather shoes?

My mom also sewed our clothes periodically (not the set above, they look way too nice!) My mom's clothes were generally thick double-knit polyester. I seems to remember an outfit of purple paisely polyester. It was kind of scratchy and loud. But hey.. it was 1976.

Culottes are too much to bear! I grew up in Texas and my mom and grandmother thought they were the best thing in kids fashion since sliced bread. Fing culottes! I've blocked that pleated misery from my mind...for the most part.

One of my favorite outfits as a child was my teal corduroy culottes with a matching vest. In retrospect, I don't know what I was thinking. Then again, I have been fashionably-challenged for most of my life. I do remember I liked them in part because they were a suitable alternative to skirts since I could still go on swings and sit with my knees apart in them. Still, I live in fear that one day pictures of me in teal culottes will surface somewhere on the interwebs.

I have a pair of '04 gauchos that I keep trying to fab up with heels. They are denim and all kinds of wrong. I think I'm just going to try to sell them on ebay or burn them this winter when I can't afford conventional heating.

The word itself, culottes, makes my eyeballs itch. They belonc in the circular file along with palazzo pants.
