So......my boss just called and informed me that I am part of today's round of layoffs. I'm still stunned.

When she first told me, I swear that my ear metaphysically clogged up and all words turned to noise. I pretended that her cell phone was cutting out, so she called me back on the landline and retold me the news, then gave me the details. I'm going in to the office later to pick up the severance package and gather my few personal belongings. The upside is that I'm paid through the end of the month, plus all my PTO time (which my 'bank' was just refilled on the first of the year, so its nearly a month's pay), plus I think an additional 8 weeks of pay. And I'm eligible for unemployment, even as a part-timer. So I'm not completely screwed. But currently shell-shocked and trying not to freak out about what's going to happen after those 3 months have passed.

Whoa.

I've never been terminated/fired/laid off before.

Holy crap. That's-- wow. I'm glad the severance package isn't bad, and that you've got a window to work with. I'm sorry you had that happen to you, seriously. It's a kick in the head.

Ray, I'm sorry - like others here, I'm glad they are taking care of you for a little while and that unemployment will be yours, but it's scary seeing how this economy is starting to affect everyone. Hang in. I will make you lots of writerly breakfast.

Sorry to hear this. The anxiety is truly a hindrance. But in your capable hands, the future will shape into something cool.

I'm so sorry. That is a pretty good package. Come out here and write on my balcony. I'm at school all day so you can make soup and drink tea and work on your book. You can be my new Leroy. It's either that or a Vietnamese baby.

Dude. That really sucks. Fortunately, I am pretty much certain you'll be back on your feet again before you know it. Still sucks though. =(

Of course you know if there's anything we can do for you, you should just let us know.

Ah CRAP. Sorry to hear it...unless you kind of hated your job anyway, in which case, congratulations.

Being on the chopping block is totally old hat for me - and yet, it never seems to sting any less each time. Keep on keepin' on, chum.

that sucks, i'm sorry to hear that but it does seem great that you have 3 months at least of pay and then also possibly unemployment. lay offs are just the weirdest office environment i've ever experienced. though, i've had so many people tell me that being laid off was the best thing that ever happened to them.

Ok yes it sucks but.....
now you have more time to write, and travel (inexpensively), and maybe be a nomad and write and get paid a stipend from the government for awhile.
and....i have been laid off twice in my life and while it was hard at the moment of impact, i can look back and say i was happy it happened. i went on to better things, as you will without a doubt.
