Going to California
Sep. 1st, 2001 12:00 pmDespite waking up at 8 am, between packing, being slow and lazy, driving all over Lakeview to find the postoffice, dropping off keys at Damon's, then getting gas and slurpees as 7-Eleven, we didn't actually hit highway until nearly noon. I drove the whole day, since MelRo was still sick of driving from previous week. We stopped for an early dinner in Iowa City, and decided to actually go to a sit-down restaurant. Unfortunately, it was a game day, so there were lots of gung-ho college football fans around. We avoided the bar type eateries and ate in some weird quasi-tex-mex place with a waiter who said "you're welcome" more times than I thought humanly possible. In general, driving in Iowa was ok. The hills were sorta nice, but pretty plain and boring. Sorry, Iowans. We hit the Nebraska border, went through Omaha near sunset. I made it all the way past Lincoln, and we stayed in Grand Island, near the Mormon Island Retreat Center. The hotel was surprisingly cheap and nice, and the gas station next door had Krispey Kreme doughnut, which is what I had for breakfast on....
