I've been needing a new driver's license because a) it was expiring on my birthday in less than two weeks and b) it was in two pieces. It snapped in half randomly while waiting in line at the San Francisco airport several weeks ago. The card had developed a curve from my last wallet, so I was standing there gently trying to bend it back a little to compensate and 'crack!', there it was, in two pieces. I feared them not letting me get on the plane. No one seemed to notice or care.

I drove out today to the DMV on the far northwest side on Elston Ave. I was worried about time and wasn't planning on driving DYA to work, but decided I was being too nervous and took her downtown then made it back up north by 10:01 am. The parking lot was nearly full. There were 3 lines of people around the outside of the building, one for stickers, one for licenses, and one for something else that didn't apply to me. I got a little nervous.

I stood in the line outside. I got let in. I stood in line inside to get a number. I got let into the waiting area. I went downstairs to the bathroom and came back up and sat down. I got called. I passed the vision test. I waited in line at the cashier. I waited in line for some woman to hand her a paper (not sure what her role in the matter was). I waited in line to get my picture taken. I waited in the final seating area to collect my license. Guess what time it was when my name got called with my license? 10:33 am. I swear, I went through 6 waiting procedures but none of them were for more than 3 minutes or so. I would barely have time to crack open my book and find my place on the page before I'd have to step up.

The result is a strange washed out photo of me with a digital red spot over my left eye, up to my forehead. And the ink on the lettering of the text fades from black to blue in this way that makes me think the toner is low. I swear, I could make a better looking ID card at a self-serve copy shop.

When I left I nearly got hit in the parking lot by a Range Rover trying to pull out of an angled parking space backwards and go the wrong way down a one-way aisle. I'm guessing he was leaving after having his license revoked. Or so I hope.

In 2 hours, I leave for the airpot. In about 9 hours, I'll be in Los Angeles. I should probably pack. But first, a brief nap. Of course.
