The term astrologist generally means someone who studies astrology, right? And using such charts and graphs, then develops a narrative specific to that star sign, etc. etc., so what does one call someone who follows astrology? Whatever it is, I'm not really one of them. Sure, I read my weekly horoscope and I sometimes glance at other things related, and I think about it in terms of people's personalities at times, but I wouldn't say I'm a follower. Neither am I pagan, in the wiccan sense of the word, though maybe in other ways, but still, its not really part of my identity. But I do like science. And I like ritual. And today is the darkest day of the year, the shortest 'day' of the year in terms of sunlight, and while would probably never go around wishing people a happy solstice, I do frequently mentally mark these days. This one more than others, and this year especially, its about turning a sort of corner in the season and year, which seems appropriate for my life right now.
Tomorrow, in the car, driving east, it will be just a fraction more sunlight and daylight than today. Maybe just a few seconds. And every day after that will be a little longer too. We won't notice it really, for the most part, because the tilt of the earth and such means the coldest has yet to come really, but knowing that underneath it, something is growing and stretching, makes it seem a bit more bearable.
