Last night MelRo indulged me in multiple ways, but in this post I'm going to talk specifically about the movie I rented: Dancing at the Blue Iguana. I'm always interested in movies portraying sex work, specifically if they're marketed as being "realistic" or "cutting-edge" or anything else other than Disney, I suppose. I'm also always interested in movies featuring Jennifer Tilly. And she was playing the "bad girl" dancer, who also did some domination work on the side? How could I NOT watch this movie?
In the end the movie was....enh. When the credits rolled, it said that the movie was essentially written through improv exercises that the actors engaged in -- that explained a LOT. There were even moments when I felt the movie sort of had a "play" feel to it since there was no strict screenplay. I thought there was some excellent acting, but things moved at a glacial pace which I don't always mind if I know where it's going -- and this movie gave no indication of what direction it would take or why we should even care where it goes. And Jennifer Tilly's character made a horrible dom. But she did look excellent in her rubber dresses.
As far as portrayal of dancers, again, this movie receives the glorious rating of an "enh". Even though the tone was different, it was probably about as accurate as an episode of "G-String Divas" which isn't a total dismissal -- the HBO series had more teeth than I expected, but was still wasn't terribly thorough.
One final comment: Who knew Daryl Hannah could act?? I certainly didn't. But she acted her ass off in this movie.

I just got word that our office closes today at 3 pm. Unfortunately I'll still have to stay until about 3:30 or 4 to get ready for interns coming in on Tuesday, but I'll just pretend that the office is closing at 4 pm.
Tonight I will shuttle MelRo to the airport, or to the blue train station not too far from the airport. Then I will shuttle myself to the Horizons youth prom where I will be DJing. This is a last minute gig that came in yesterday that I'm doing partially as a favor to my friend who works there and partially because they're supposed to pay me (eventually).
Tomorrow morning I will sleep and sleep and sleep after this week, the longest week ever.
