Last night's adventure into the world of free pass movie premieres was rather successful. The movie itself was pretty good, and Liza wrote a nice little synopsis here, and for the most part I agree with her assessment (except for the parts about the book, since I haven't read it).

It was nice to see a movie that was 95% pitch black comedy and satire, versus the half-and-half stuff we're usually given in "edgy" movies. I hate movies that start of interesting and different but then dissolve into a typical _________ (e.g. romantic comedy, family drama, melodrama, coming-of-age, etc.). The last 15 minutes or so of Rules of Attraction was a little weak, but it still wasn't bad. The soundtrack was quite lovely and one of the best parts of the movie.

And um, why were we the only person laughing during some of the scenes? People are so weird and take things way too seriously sometimes. I love that the movie was satirizing cheap emotional ploys to win sympathy from the audience, but over half the audience was still suckered in. The commentary from people would have been annoying if I hadn't been laughing so hard. We made "friends" with people next to us even though I knew they would probably annoy me. She has some classic lines like "Oh! It's like Memento!" (said with great confidence when the movie ran backwards in certain scenes). Um, no. Memento didn't literally go backwards, so it's actually not the same. She also was the queen of stating the obvious in certain scenes, a way of affirming that she "got it". So hilarious.
[But, you know, like, mostly this movie just proved to me that Jessica Biel is such a risk-taker in her acting choices. She just threw away that Seventh Heaven stigma, didn't she? I mean, this is, like, nothing I've seen before.]

So anyway yeah, my official advice is for this movie is don't watch it if you don't like the dark stuff.
