Where do I live?

Only in my neighborhood could this happen.

I'm leaving Walgreens, and there's a guy on the payphone. Late teens, early 20s, white, wearing b-boy type clothes (baggy jeans, hilfiger hooded sweatshirt, timbaland boots, ski cap). He's having a heated discussion.

"Can you believe that? So messed up.....I mean, he said it was because of my clothes, but I think it's because I'm straight.....No, I know, I'm gonna be broke forever -- I've looked for jobs all over this neighborhood and there's nothing!"

Honey, you may have been dressed cute for a Saturday in the club, but not for a job interview.

***And even if he didn't get the job for being straight, it's still an amusing and rare statement. Or maybe I'm just affected by working all day everyday with people being discriminated for being LGBT or HIV positive and I don't believe in reverse oppression. Maybe it's just me.

Liza giving a younster the benefit of the doubt? That back-pain medication must be pretty strong.

But (and I can't believe I'm about to defend this character) maybe he was applying for a weekend job at a (gay?) club. Maybe?

wow -- you have transformed your life. you're defending a teen!!

actually, based on other snippets of the conversation i heard (but didn't write here for the sake of a brief anecdote), i think he had just applied at the walgreens.

but even if your hypothesis is correct (and i don't necessarily even believe that was he was saying was absolutely false), it still amuses me that someone could say the phrase. it's so rare.

Me neither, cutie.

It always looks like the dominant culture whining about some minor loss of power and agency.

To quote a hated song, "That don't impress me much."
