I almost forgot to mention this, but fish unintentionally reminded me. First off, let me say, I don't hate the Dixie Chicks. I mean, I don't really love or like them either, but all of these non-emotions are mostly due to the fact that I'm completely unfamiliar with their work, couldn't really name them upon hearing them on the radio, and frankly, don't really have a compulsion to get to know them. But I don't hate them.

This morning while eating breakfast I was humming Fleetwood Mac, but I didn't even pay attention to what song it was. Then I turn on the tv and flip past VH1 and hear Landslide and realize, wow, that's strange. That's the song I was thinking of this morning. Then I watch a monstrosity of a Dixie Chicks video. It was horribly hellish. I was completely embarassed for them.

I've never really loved Dave Meyers, and I'm quite sure he did this to them. The video has the colors and visuals of Lil Bow Wow's most recent and Pink's Don't Let Me Get Me, which didn't really work for the ballad. The outifts were horrid. There was no point except to pout and look overly melodramatic at the camera while lip syncing while they walked around in three different settings. And one of them had Christina Aguilera's hair from Lady Marmalade, and stood in front of some cheesy special effect of a waterfall flowing up. The video ended with them standing in the middle of the ocean a la TLC in Waterfalls, with another one of them fondling her pregnant belly.

Everything about the video just upset me. And I don't really get that upset about things like this. I have no idea why it triggered such an extremely unpleasant reaction.

Please, do yourself a favor and turn away. Don't follow my example.

Haven't seen that one, but the one with them live at some music awards ceremony with Stevie Nicks herself was pretty tame.

I've seen them in passing several times and never found the women themselves offensive or upsetting. It really is the fault of the video -- it just seemed cheesy and crappy and smarmy and bothersome.

Disturbing videos/songs are par for the course nowadays with the Chicks, I think. That "Goodbye Earl" song/video combo for their last album was particulary distressing. I mean, don't get me wrong, I hate wife beaters (the people, not the tank tops) as much as the next person, but do I think they should be murdered? No. Do I think songs that get radio airplay should codone it (whether tongue-in-cheek or not)? Even less so.

However, I did like the Trading Spaces where Natalie MacMaster (is that her name?) traded spaces with her mom. She's cute. (Both she and her mom, actually.)

'Goodbye Earl' bothered me because it seemed to trivialize a real social problem (domestic violence and battered wife syndrome) and didn't seem terribly educational or empowering to me. But that's not so much the song's fault as it is the people around it who hyped it as some sort of anthem. And I can't really hate on songs that talk about violence as fantasy since, you know, hip hop is full of that. I think there's room for it, just like there's room for violent video games. If someone's going to fuck someone up, they can find inspiration from anything, whether it's Eminem, Quake, or a piece of litter on the ground.

I think Natalie MacMaster was the one with Lady Marmalade hair! She was less cute then. But in general I like her.

On an unrelated note, have you been watching much Real World this season? I've only caught snippets. Is it worth holding out for a marathon?

I saw that damn video and it made me wanna puke. Natalie's hair was awful and the fondling of the pregnant belly was too much to take. I hate it when women fondle their pregnant stomachs!!!!!!

Dude, I even LOVE pregnant women and don't mind the actual touching and showing off of bellies, but this video was wrong. It was so "look how pregnant and womanly I am!"

I don't really have an opinion on the Dixe Chicks either, musically. When I occasionally hear one of their songs they're usually kinda' pretty (or I guess, in this case, "purty"), not annoying enough to turn off and not good enough to remember.

While I agree that Meyers is an extremely poor director (considering the number of high-profile acts he gets) the fashion/hair styles, I think, is all on the Chicks themselves. The only time I ever see them is at award shows and they are almost always shockingly tacky and unattractive.

It's like they go out of their way to look Trailor-Glamourous ... kinda that Anna Nicole/Rosanne thing where people who never had money suddenly have a whole lot and have no idea what to do with it fashion-wise.

When I downloaded the Dixie Chicks cover of Landslide, it was unintentional, and since my playlist is just every song I've ever downloaded...

that's my best defense because I really wasn't paying attention to what song was playing.

no, no, the cover of the song itself is pretty good. i mean the song is so great, it's hard to have it completely ruined by any cover. Except, perhaps, by a horrible video.

so keep the song, but also keep your eyes closed when watching tv.

I hate Stevie Nicks. I think she sounds like a goat. And it's sad that she writes nice songs that she sounds like shit singing. I was glad when Tori Amos covered "Landslide" because finally I could listen to it without the urge to stab myself in the ears.

Dave Mayers is cute, but after the high school song, I have no use for him.

I like Pink.

Little Bow-Wow is fucking cute.

I adore the Dixie Chicks. Mainly because it's feel-good music that is well crafted. The harmonies are always tight and interesting and they pen some funny isht. They are just cute -- which is their thing.


Christina A... scares me, but I am looking forward to seeing her new video (finally) and reading it. But I do not want to see her bones and crotch anymore. I feel she keeps reminding me of why I chose to be a faggot in the first place.

I miss TLC... and I wonder the same thing... actual album, thrown together album... but it won't really matter if it is good, really... which is also what I wanna know. (Think about it, the cut and paste method has been done and has been done well... especially by Kathy Acker... rap music has been doing it forever (although in that lingo it is usually called "sampling" -- but take Puffy's "re-reading" of "Every Breath" and how he just changed a few words and kept the chorus, that is pretty much cut-and-paste (well, an argument can be made, of course... this is getting too pomo for my just awakened state...)

Little Bow-Wow IS cute, but that Dave Meyers video where he lives in the house in the neighborhood with all the scantily clad girls really freaks me out. I mean, they are way too old for him and their affection doesn't seem to be sisterly. Sexualization of children = ewww, I feel.
