I'm on my second cup of raspberry herbal tea and I'm planning on riding this the entire day. Which means if I do end up staying until 7 pm with volunteers, I might go through a dozen teabags. Except I only have three left in the drawer.

But no fear, today I'm wearing my superhero outfit. Black boots and gay jeans and my omnipotent grey t-shirt. I started feeling all-powerful in my grey t-shirt back in high school. Alas and alack, the shirt I'm wearing today is not the same shirt I started with ten years ago since my body has grown and shrunk and changed much like the shirt itself except luckily my seams haven't yet split. In a moment of cleaning out the unnecessary, I gave that shirt away which is one of my few regrets in life, except even that seems like a stretch since I so rarely think about the loss. No, today I'm just wearing a replacement but luckily the power comes not on in the material itself but in the color and more importantly how I wear it. It's my superhero uniform.

What feats of grandeur I will accomplish today remain to be seen, but I have big plans involving sheets of a butcher paper and a sharpie where I make a master plan for myself.

This morning I found myself thinking "I need a hobby" which was strange seeing as I have plenty of activities and interests that are currently being neglected, which include, but are not limited to: a massive reading list of literature and nonfiction; an informal film group with Madness Librarian involving trashy/cult movies; my own personal film curriculum courtesy of Netflix that includes a catalog of French New Wave, Italian Neorealism, and American films of the 70s; painting; cooking; beat juggling and scratching and production (DJing); writing. Plus, there are "entertainment hobbies", which basically means going to shows and performances and galleries and supporting other artists, particularly those that are my friends. And then there are my sexual interests which occasionally fall into the category of "hobby" when it comes to learning new things, doing them with new people and finding new accessories.

I think my morning thought came from the urge to have something small and new. Something to channel when I need a tiny signifier that I'm engaging on a new path. I'm trying to do this some with writing -- doing more writing exercises, finding new places to write and new things to write about. But I still want to take on something absolutely new to me

Perhaps it's also from my recent smoking cutbacks. I need a hobby to occupy this bit of nervous energy, something to help me step back from the day and regroup.

I'm considering thimble collecting.

hobby needed

Now days a lot of kids like to put together models of minature cars and airplanes and sniff glue while they are doing it.
In a more serious note perhaps you should write a new novel. Cheers, Nemo.

That's about the best description of taking up a hobby I've come across, ever.

My apartment has been really messy and neglected for a while, so this week my "hobby" is turning my bathroom into an haven of antiseptic cleanliness and serenity - throwing out old tubes of things and scrubbing all surfaces. And your passage, there, was exactly how I felt last night while getting started.

Please define "gay jeans". I have long had a theory that there are gay jeans and straight jeans, but could not put my finger on the difference...is there a universal signifier or do you just know them when you see them (ie, on a cute, gay ass)?

Glad you're rawkstar today.

the short definition of gay jeans is generally that only the gay boys are wearing that particular style, i.e. super stlyish. often this means fitting in a flattering way to show off the ass and/or the package, though in this case my gay jeans are more about the style of denim -- thinner material, worn, nearly dirty looking down the center of the legs, and the material almost seems to be striated. it's hard to describe, though i KNOW you've seeen them and possibly own them. current trouble is, these jeans have found their way in to lots of straight boy closets, so they're less gay.

keeping my apartment clean has become a hobby of mine. after the major overhaul at the end of march and massive wall-to-wall cleaning, i've taken to the destruction of dog hairballs and straightening of shoes and clearing of dishes as favorite pastimes.

good luck in cleaning your apartment!

I do in fact have jeans like that - very dark blue in color. Thank you for that thorough description. I will keep my eyes open each night as I pass Big Chicks. :)

hmm...thimble collecting?

so you're listing all these fabulous and great activities and i'm thinking...that sounds fun...oooh i'd like to see/do that too...on and on...and then i was thinking. god DAMN...ray's an interesting guy. i'm a lucky lady. until...thimble collecting...

as much as i would support you in any activity you undertake, i must draw the line on any kitsch collecting. because you KNOW that long past the point where you were interested in collecting thimbles, people will forever be buying you thimbles and if we were to ever live together, *I'D* have to live with those darn things and cats knocking them over and the dust...don't get me started. ;)

not a fan of thimbles, eh? other possibilities include: Campbell's soup paraphinalia, McDonald's happy meal toys from the 80's, and my best idea -- remember how CD's used to come in overlong cardboard boxes? i'm going onto ebay right now to see what i can dig up. 'cause i need more paper and cardboard in my house, particularly if Adam Ant is on any of them.

how about spoons instead? decorative spoons that have images of various cities and states i've visited? no?

maybe i should collect twenty-dollar bills. i wouldn't mind receiving those as gifts for the rest of my life.
