I just read this action-alert press release that said this:
On June 10, the high court of Ontario, Canada's most populous province, ruled that the exclusion of same-sex couples from civil marriage infringes human dignity, harms families, and violates the constitution. The court ordered an immediate end to this cruel discrimination.

Cruel discrimination? C'mon now. That seems a bit lofty. We're not talking about physical torture or imprisonment or other things that can be more accurately described as "cruel".

I'm experiencing an intense post-lunch-sleep coma. Or at least the desire to be in one, since I'm obviously not typing and dozing at the same time. I just had a flash of a line from Buffy when someone tells Giles to be careful or one day he'd wake up in a coma. Indeed.

It's all quiet on the livejournal front. So sad.

A) cruel discrimination *is* a big much. though i can't lie - even though "gay marriage" is far at the bottom of my list of priorities (probably not even on it), i *was* a little excited about the ontario ruling, of only b/c 1) it's canada, and 2) if i follow dexter back there, i could stay legally if we got hitched!(kind of being facetious...)
B) i saw a short film called "heroes" about your fave guy, james dale. blah. he was at the reception afterward, too. blah.

i know you seen me on the video,

Its true that it might not be the cruelest thing out there, but think of the long term affects marriage has on any couple: the health benefits, the child custody issues and the very legitamacy it gives to a relationship.

I would say it is cruel to exclude a person from those benefits merely because a group of people find it against their religion.

I'm all about making civil marriage available to anyone and everyone, and not just people who are sexual partners of any sex. I think if two friends want to commit to living a life and building a family together, they should have the option of all the federal benefits that are provided with marriage. Though I'll start with plain old same-sex marriage I suppose before I begin the campaign for the freedom NOT to marry. So the issue of marriage I'm down with -- I work for a group that organizes the Freedom to Marry Project, after all.

But I hate using inflammatory language for the sake of proving a point, rather than just explaining the reality, which should be enough. It's all relative, I know, and I guess that's why it's hard to deem denial of marriage as "cruel" when the federal government engages in harsher and more violent forms of discrimination.

I realized after I wrote it I was preaching to the choir (I'm just being more cancerian than usual today)

I feel ya, it is all so subjective I suppose.
