Between Louche's posts on childhood and Dommeyourass's new user icon with Wonder Woman, I was reminded of a story.

Two of my favorite television shows from early childhood that had two of my favorite women was WKRP in Cincinnati for Loni Anderson and Wonder Woman for Lynda Carter. I was mostly watching these in syndication since they were slightly before my time, or at least the time when I was forming memories. Around the time of the syndicated reruns, a new show premiered on NBC called Partners in Crime, starring Lynda Carter and Loni Anderson in 1984, which I remember because during the summer Olympics it got pre-empted, much to my dismay.

This show lasted all of one year, I believe, though I think there were reruns played on Lifetime for awhile. The premise were these two women who were "opposites" who both married the same guy and find out about it when he dies, and they end up taking over his private investigation business. IMDB has a review that called it VIP meets Cagney & Lacey, and you know how I feel about Cagney & Lacey. Or at least some of you do, if you've been to my house.

So yes, I loved this show -- even as a child I loved campy and trashy television, or maybe I just had bad taste because I was a kid. Anyway, I have a very distinct memory of watching once while visiting Savannah -- at the house of close friends of my parents from their Army days who we visited once or twice a year. Their daughter was about my brother's age and their son was about my age and we mostly hung out the four of us together but night we stayed in separate rooms according to gender. So Suzanne and I had sleeping bags on the floor of the office spare room, watching television, and she turns the channel and I declare that I like the show, so she indulges me in watching, probably amused at the choice. I remember it was scene of them in a car, getting ready to do some sort of stakeout or break-in, and their wearing all black outfits, probably in leather.

"I reeeaaaally like Loni Anderson," I gush.
"Yeah, she's very pretty," Suzanne answers.
"Yeah." Pause. "She's something else too."
"What?"
"I can't say -- it's a bad word." [I think I even cringed at the time at my own language, but I wasn't sure how else to express my embarassment.]
"A bad word?"
"Yeah, it starts with the letter 'S'."
"Whisper it in my ear."
So I leaned over and whispered, "she's SEXY!" and then proceeded to laugh it off and feel supremely embarassed. Suzanne seemed a little surprised but mostly amused.

Speaking of, I noticed while reading the paper yesterday that it was Loni Anderson's birthday. While the idea of having sex with her now, or even in her glory days in the late-70's and 80's doesn't really appeal to me...at all....I still have a soft spot in my heart for both her and Lynda.

''welcome back, your dreams were your ticket out, welcome back, to that same old place that you laughed about...'''

and barbarino.

i want to download the themes to all these shows and make a mix CD.

Not only have I seen every episode, at least twice, and not only do I have a magnet of them on my fridge, BUT I also have a photo of me in girl drag with Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly displayed rather prominently in my house. It actually freaks out [livejournal.com profile] dommeyourass to see me looking like a drag queen with them.

Wait, wait, wait. Let me understand this...YOU MET THEM BOTH?!?!? WOW! I can't believe this! I loved that show! I am at a loss for words. I didn't think anyone else still remembered that show!

Somehow I had the idea that you were my age or older. I'm 32 (almost) and I abosultely loved those shows. However where you thought she was sexy, I just wanted to be her. =)

BTW - Market Days party at my house tomorrow night (sorry for the lame ass notice) but I'd love for you to come and bring some friends. The more the merrier. If you are available let me know and I'll email you the details.

Yep, I'm a bit younger. My brother is in his early 30s, so growing up with him exposed me to pop culture phenomenons that probably would have escaped other people my age.

Thanks for the invite! I can't make it, but another time? It would be fun to meet you.

Hi- I just started reading your journal recently---
I was so in love with Lynda Carter when I was 8, I had fantasies of stealing her away from her husband... there was also a woman who looked like her (but 2x shorter) at my church, and I would stare and stare.. when she was a volunteer handing out communion, I refused to go up-- I had a crying fit, I just couldn't deal- my parents thought I was hilarious and TOLD this woman about my crush!!

Do you remember Lynda Carter had a variety show? I just remember her singing "rubber band man" and being really embarrased...

I didn't know about her variety show!!! oh my goodness.

Does she still do those 1-800-Contacts commercials? So sad, though I'm sure it pays well so I ain't mad.

Now that I think about it, the woman at my church who I was madly in crush with from the age of 8 to 18 looks a bit like Lynda Carter....

Here's a link to the "variety special"--http://www.lacosa.sion.com/ww/html/miscel/variety/variety1.htm
There is a picture of her if you scroll down in a frightening outfit with a short skirt and a white beret- this is what she wore when singing "rubber band man"-- the end of my infatuation, I have to say...
