1. Any folks out there with a Mac who'd like to help me out with Microsoft Word (I have OS X)? I don't have $200 bucks to buy the real deal, but I have other ways of exchanging goods or favors.

2. Our new kitchen has been the location of some roach sightings -- just those little small ones that seem to be more prominent in Chicago. I'm not completely opposed to high power chemical poisons or those little black disks you stick on the counters, but since there's a dog and a cat in the household, I do worry about them getting sick. Anyone know about non-crazy chemical solutions that work? For some reason I remember reading about using borax, but that might have been for ants, and am I supposed to just sprinkle it all over the kitchen since I haven't found a source or hideout for the bugs yet? No thanks. Also, any experience with those high-frequency noise makers that are supposed to drive off bugs? Do they actually work and what brand and is it going to hurt the animals ears too?

I didn't like waking up to the news about Johnny Cash and John Ritter. But other than that, it's been a good morning.

p.s.

mariel doesn't need her files (now she tells me after all that transferring), and i suppose i can still do work on that low-grade word processing program we have at home. so getting word isn't urgent after all.

also, she wants her computer to go to EL SALVADOR!! to this community she supports. i understand her wanting to do that, but she asked me if i could SHIP it and she'd pay for it. i told her no, but that i would hand it off to a friend of hers here to hold instead.

Nothing, because I don't have it on my computer! I'm shamelessly asking if there are any, um, pirates (of the non-carribbean sort) on my friends list.

p-shaw!

I, too, had a roach siting yesterday - my first in this apartment. I hate and fear these things, despite having dressed as one for a drag king act. But I don't know of any good, non-toxic-to-pets way of making them not want to come near. I think epinions.com might help in finding out, though...

Boric Acid (the active ingredient in Borax) is an effective way to kill any insect that has a chitinous exoskeleton like ants and roaches. Borax has only a little Boric Acid, buy the straight stuff from the garden dept. at Home Depot (or other hardware purveyor), it is safe for dogs, cats, and humans. Cheers, Nemo

non what?

there are two things i don't try to do non chemically: kill bugs or wash my face. i have no trust in nature for clear skin or killing pests.
i too have cats and as long as you keep the little disks under the sink, in the back, the animals shouldn't be able to get them... and between bleaching everything regularly and those disks, i kept my nyc apartment pretty bug free. i may have to credit the cats a little, too. i lost innocence finding my littlest kitty chewing on a roach once.
anyways, let me know if you can't find a mac version of word anywhere, i have it and we can try to load it on your computer. xoxo

tiny hiding scurrying crunchy things might be very exciting for the cats,
when they're cooped up inside all day, every day...

I've found that the little disks seem to be pretty pet-safe. At least my various cats have always left them alone. But putting them out of reach of the thumbless is another option.

I have a crossover cable and may be able to help you with your software issue.
