Jul. 10th, 2001 04:37 pmSo I just faxed off my lease application for Melanie's apartment (hopefully soon to be my official "new place").
For the first time in awhile I'm thinking seriously about what it's going to be like. I'm simultaneously nervous and excited. Which reminds me -- I e-mailed my parents yesterday. Let me just post the note -- sometimes I crack myself up when I re-read things and don't even recognize my own tone. Like someone else is talking about my life:
Hey Mom & Dad,
This past weekend I felt like I had a slice of Atlanta -- and a hot slice at that. It was in the upper 90's on Saturday afternoon, and the humidity was probably around 100%! It did actually rain briefly, but unlike the South, I feel like in the Midwest when it rains, it doesn't "break" the heat -- in fact, it seems like it gets hotter right after a brief shower. But I guess it's pretty infrequently, so it's not too horrible.
This past weekend Lambda had one of our big fundraisers, which is a boat cruise on the lake around the downtown area. YOu may remember me working this in past years, even while in undergrad. It's a fun event, especially now that they've pared it down to a more simple operation -- last year, there was a brunch before hand and a silent auction that took place on the boat, both of which require a lot more preparation and work the day of. This year we had just the cruise itself, so it was a lot more laid back and fun.
This weekend I also DJed a house party for my friend Cari (we went to Northwestern together). She is training for the AIDS Ride in September, which is a bike ride from Montreal to Boston. So she decided to have a fundraising party to help with the costs as well as pledges. I had a good time, and it was my first official houseparty gig. Maybe at some point I'll have another first gig where I actually get paid! But for now, I'm just looking to have fun and practice.
Melanie has been in Vermont for almost 4 weeks and
it's been hard to have her away! But next week (Friday the 20th) I'm flying out to New Hampshire and she's going to pick me up and we're driving to Cape Cod to stay in her family's house there, with her uncle and 2 cousins. I'm excited to have a long weekend and mini-vacation on the beach.
When I get back, I'm going to start packing up my apartment and doing a little bit of moving. I probably won't be "officially" moved until mid- August, but I am planning on having all my stuff into the new place by the time Melanie returns from camp. I don't want to fully unpack before she comes back, since we'll want to arrange furniture together and we're planning on painting the bedroom as well. I'm excited to be "setting up house" with her and the new apartment is very large -- closer in size to my apartment in Evanston my senior year at NU.
So that's the news on this end. Work is still busy and good. Hope all is well on y'all's front. (thanks again for the birthday gift!)
love, aj

Reasons why this is funny:
1. Do I really talk like this? I don't think so.
2. This is the first I've told them I'm moving.
3. I've never even officially identified Melanie as anything outloud. For Mother's Day I included a picture of us in her card and on the picture I wrote "Me and Melanie (girlfriend/significant other/???)". I keep threatening to call her my fiancee so that they'll recognize me as being serious, but that's pretty silly. I know they won't be too hot on me moving in with someone I'm dating (they weren't too keen on my bro doing it, and they literally were engaged), but my excuse is I can't get married legally, so it'll just have to wait. Or something. Damnit. Maybe I shouldn't even try to translate my life into their language and just let them try to adjust.
4. This is also "funny" because they haven't replied. Woo-hoo. Let's hear it for silent parents. Gotta love it. But anyway, this is just Defense Exhibit D in the case In re the Matter of Raymond's Parents. Your honor, I am a dutiful child and they are the one's being a$$es.
5. Um, that's it.
So yeah....moving in together.....I had more to say on the subject, but I've blanked. If anyone happens to have advice/suggestions/experiences, I'd be interested in hearing them.
