I woke up from a dream where I ate dinner at a posh restaurant with a fixed menu and our table was between two train tracks. It was exhilerating, not dirty or noisy at all. It felt intimate to be so close proximity to both my dinner date (my friend Assirap) as well as the strangers on a train who would pass by and watch us eat. This resturant was in an imaginary city my brain created that was a perfect blend of large and medium. Lots of activity and things to do, completely accessible and manageable and liveable. It took place in the future. I think it was in California, and I was surprised even in my dream that I was considering moving there.

I woke up not feeling restless to change locations or homes, just hungry. That dream meal was good.

I went to the grocery store this morning for a few essentials (milk, cream, toilet paper) and non-essentials (hot dogs, charcoal briquets, even though it's 50 degreees out....) and I spent a lot of time pondering my typical grocery store koan. It goes something like this:

Fat-free half-and-half? How is that not just skim milk?

I made a promise to someone today that I would write. I intend to keep that promise. I gotta get out of this place though. I'll either get sucked in negatively or positively (i.e. distracted). But first, one "distraction" is required.......

Fat free half-&-half could exist. It would be skim milk plus guar gum plus all kinds of other thickeners and corn syrup solids and nastyness like they put in non-dairy creamer. It woudl be gross and nasty and not really a dairy product. Just a viscous version of skim milk that would make you want to go back to bed when you drank it in your coffee.

that's pretty spot-on to what the ingredient label says! cause, yes, it does exist. and every time i see it in the store, i walk around for 5-10 contemplating the koan. "If half-and-half is half milk and half cream, and fat free milk is skim milk, and fat free cream is skim milk, than fat free half-and-half is half skim milk, half skim milk. Except it's not."

Wow - It's really gross what they put in food. I'd rather have full-fat dairy products than the low-fat ones where they make up for the lack of fat with all kinds of wierd viscous additives.
