Last night I started to drive myself a bit crazy by overconsuming news on the hurricane devastation. I suppose it's human nature to react more to something that's more closely connected to your experience. My best friend was down there. I just visited New Orleans and Biloxi. I spent my childhood in the south. Oh, quick report about
thebrownhornet: I called up Quincy and she left me a message saying he's still fine, and getting ready to head to Houston sometime soon to catch a plane to southern California and "the safety of dry land and into [her] arms".
At some point I had to quit and washed dishes to distract myself. I didn't stay away too long. It's like I'm straddling this line where wrapping up myself too much into the situation seems histrionic and insulting to those actually surviving out there, but staying ignorant of the scope of the situation and not pushing for accountability seems dangerous as well.
Here are some highlights.
The Rebellion of the Talking Heads: This Slate.com article by Jack Shafer has some good links of video and audio of normally placating news reporters 'losing it' at political folks because they are so affected by actually being on the ground in the midst. Their definition of 'losing it' still seems pretty tame, but it's nice to see the glacier moving at least a tiny bit.
Halliburton to the rescue [courtesy of
live_laugh_love]: I saw this one coming after Bush's speech when he made sure to include a plug for private businesses joining the fight or some isht.
FEMA pulls a Stuart and says 'Lemme-do-it!' and rejects help from Chicago. [courtesy of
vfc, though it's a different paper]: Somehow I doubt Chicago is the only city being under-utilized.
Iraq Buries Its Dead: Because guess what? On the other side of the world, 1,000 people died in one day too, when a stampede on a bridge led to chaos. It was a peaceful pilgrimmage that got triggered after the rumor of terrorism was spread. Perhaps because of a 3 year imperialist occupation which also feeds a growing insurgency? Twenty bucks says President Bush will never mention this in a speech ever. If it took him 3 days to address the tens of thousands dead by tsunami, and 3 days to address half a million people immediately homeless with possibly thousands dead in his own country, there will be no concern about this, he probably dozed off during that 2 seconds of his presidential daily briefing.
But I'm not all serious business. Last night
dommeyourass and I had a 5 hour marathon of Six Feet Under that was only briefly interrupted once to.....make noises that might embarass our neighbors, shall we say.
Last night I had a dream that
mintwaster and I were playing badminton in her backyard while both wearing only white t-shirts and white briefs, but she didn't have a shuttlecock so we were playing with a biscuit. A premonition?
