I was planning on a trip to the post office which got averted by remembering a drop box a few blocks away that has a 5 o'clock pickup (most of them around us have a final pickup at noon).

Allow me to be glib and say there are two types of people in this world: those who put their mail in the dropbox then walk away and those who must pull down the handle a second time to make sure it fell into the box before they can walk away and sleep at night.

I am of the latter.

Today I put my four envelopes into the mailbox and released. Then I reopened the lid. ONE OF THEM WAS STUCK. It did not go down. I had to flip the lid an additional time.

In that second, every choice I've ever made in my life regarding my behavior was completely and utterly validated.

I have totally had that experience. The one time you don't shut your door or (in my case) don't lock your car totally justifies all the times you force an impatient and less compulsive person to wait 5 minutes while you double-check.

Woe unto the person who doesn't remember whether I turned my car alarm on or not.

was there any doubt that a heathy dose of neurosis is, well, HEALTHY and justifiable under any and all circumstances?

i'm the latter too.

I always reopen the lid to make sure my mail isn't stuck.
I'm glad I'm not alone.

I love you, Raymond, and it's reading things like this that reminds me why I do.

I stood in front of the Davis Theater waiting for my date the other night and thought: Jen! Albany Park! Just directly north of me! Must see her soon.

Ha. I pull it down twice. I also press elevator buttons even after someone else has pressed them and they are lit up.
