This morning I got up and said, I'm doing morning pages! So I did them. I mean, it wasn't really morning pages plural, it was more like a morning paragraph, but hey whatever. Writing is writing. And now I'm buckling down to finish this damn short story that is so close to being done (the first draft, that is) and I even know exactly what the last paragraph will look like and the majority of the steps I'm taking to get there, but I keep getting distracted with wanting to read obsessively anything about Oscars and resisting the urge to write my own long post rehashing a lot of what people have already said and refreshing my friends page and reading e-mails about dharma. I have to e-mail out this draft today to my writing group, and I have to do it with enough time to go out in the world and find a video store to rent my film group selection, which might be dangerous because my movie is not exactly obscure, but considering most stores don't carry many movies beyond "new releases", I might be in trouble.

Here's my short report on Oscars:
Ugh, Crash, yuck. The interpretive dance number represented and summed up exactly why I hated the movie, especially the part with the "Redeemed, Complicated" Racist Cop sexually molesting for half the song. Ang Lee, Philip Seymour Hoffman, George Clooney, yay. Reese Witherspoon, Rachel Weisz, ok, sure (though I would have preferred Catherine Keener for the latter). Charlize Theron, why does your house have no mirrors to see how wrong that dress was? Men in tuxedos with crazy lapels were not terribly flattering. I love Dolly Parton, but Three 6 Mafia, while their live performance last night was erratic and strange and not well captured by the sound techs, the song itself completely deserved to win because it made that movie, and hello, their acceptance was unadulterated enthusiasm and thrill, which is why I watch these things. And people's reaction to their win, at the Academy awards or online? Hi, it shows that schlocky movies like Crash aren't working, people are still racist and classist and blindly say stupid things that show it. And Jon Stewart stole my joke! "Walk the Line was Ray, with white people." Joaquin didn't laugh, which made me not like him.

Hmm, maybe I had too much coffee this morning. I'm feeling a little manic. Perhaps a large piece of chocolate cake for lunch will calm me down.

I quite agree. Chocolate cake! You don't know me, by the way. I just happened upon your journal on a key word search (which I now cannot remember).

At any rate, you're fabulous, and if you wouldn't mind terribly, I'd like to continue reading your journal. Budding writer here, too. Bout to have a short story published. @whee!

congrats on the short story! where is it being published? i'm currently in the midst of my own wave of submissions, waiting to hear back from a couple places on a finished piece. it's a tough process, as you know.

i wasn't just idly name-calling -- i was trying to engage you about your comments. i didn't say you WERE anything, i said i thought your word choice was problematic. if you had just said "dolly parton was robbed!", i wouldn't have said the same thing.

maybe i didn't go about it the exact right way, especially since we don't know each other very well, but i stand by my assessment of your comments from an outside perspective. i mean, you're a white guy calling a rap group "a bunch of thugs". i'm a big hiphop fan, and a big fan of calling out white people on their isht (including my own). you're probably at the wrong journal.

i think i'm pretty fabulous. and it's okay if you disagree with that!

Hey, I'm sorry man. I'm an asshole. Probably better you know now than later. :) You're absolutely entitled to that opinion, and you made a good point. I deleted my crappy responses. Hope you can look past them.
