A fuse blew in the house this afternoon so after replacing it, I said "fck it" and went to a movie and came back to find the computer was up and running already and when I went to open itunes, it was doing all these wonky things that I cancelled out of, and then my library contained only 3,000 songs and no playlists. I managed to reimport the other 7,000 songs missing without too much effort, but the playlists are gone, gone, gone. All of them. All of the information with each track as well, regarding when it was added, how many times it had been played, etc. etc. This is unexpectedly devastating. Well, first I was frustrated, then rageful, and kicked some isht around, then I calmed down and got really really sad. I mean, all the songs are still there, the loss is negligible, microscopic even. But when faced with this mass of unorganized songs, I am overwhelmed. When I think of all the playlists I had made for specific occasions, mixes for people that were 'pending' and hadn't been burned yet, mixes I burned for people long ago when the songs had near-forgotten meaning. Hell, even my "unplayed" list is gone, because now, EVERY song is considered unplayed.

I am also scared that this is the beginning of the end of my little emac. There have been other random tiny problems popping up in the past few weeks and I've been ignoring them, hoping they will fix themselves, which is obviously the prudent way of dealing with anything mechanical or electronic.

Perhaps some of your playlists may be intact on your iPod...oh do you have one?

Also, not to suggest the worst will happen, but perhaps your mac is gently saying "...back everything up while you still have time!!"

I think that one of the reasons why I haven't reloaded all of my music back on to my computer is because of the scar that having the first one die on me suddenly. (but, I just got an external harddrive, so no more excuses). That is a fucking bummer.

i'm sorry to hear about the loss of your playlists. it's like the archive remains, but all the finding aids & ways you made the files meaningful are missing. i have two wonderful mixes from you -- one more space-age & one melancholy. i can transcribe & send playlists if you'd like, but they're from some time ago...

thank you for the offer, but there's no need. i'm less attached to mixes i've given away to others -- it's kind of like a letter, i don't need necessarily to xerox it before mailing.

now that a day has passed and the initial shock as worn off, i'm seeing this as an opportunity to reorganize!
