This morning I read only a few pages of Entertainment Weekly during breakfast. I am way behind on the important pop culture matters, though I did spend a bit of time this morning reading about Owen Wilson's suicide attempt.

Today I had to return books to the library, and I was super excited to find Ian McEwan's new novel(la) (On Chesil Beach) which I will probably read in its entirety this weekend. Or hell, even in an afternoon -- its 200 pages, but 200 pages of a 5x7 book with big margins. I also checked out the DVD "Derailed", because it looked like a trashy thriller that might be satisfying to watching during lunch time when I have low expectations. Plus, Clive Owen.

Omg, was this movie bad. Bad bad bad. First off was the rape scene, which is always unfortunate as a moviegoer anyway, but worse when it's unexpected. Then, I pretty much figured out the 'secret' as soon as the plot started to unfold, but instead of turning it off, I decided to watch the rest of the movie on double-speed with subtitles turned on so I could read along, just to see if I would be right or wrong. I watched a 100 minute movie in just over an hour. It didn't really get better, it actually got worse, and didn't pay off in any sort of believable or satisfying way. Even the presence of RZA couldn't save it. It was filmed in Chicago, but that almost made me more cranky, that they ruined it. I should have watched Casino Royale instead (though I was thinking I'd save it for the weekend, hence me getting the movie in the first place).

Last week I watched an amazing movie -- The Host. It was a monster movie, it was a disaster movie, it had political implications, it had unexpectedly hilarious moments, and the special effects weren't too overwhelming. All that for one dollar. I love the redbox rental machine at the grocery store! Except for when I browse and all they have available are straight-to-video titles.

Last night we were watching tv and saw a preview of the new Jodie Foster movie, and I totally want to do a double-feature of it and The Invasion. Except I might want to see The Invasion this weekend. I'm really trying to cram a lot into three days.

I'm on the fence regarding The Invasion. I know I'm not going to like it but I do like Kidman and Craig. So I don't know.

Have you seen Terry Gilliam's Tideland? Wow...it's the sort of movie you'll either think is brilliant genius or unwatchable tripe. I'm afraid I fall into the latter category but it's so bad that I almost want people to watch it so we can talk about it. This coming from a lifelong Gilliam fan (granted, I never saw Brothers Grimm either).

The preview for The Invasion sold me, but I just went to Rotten Tomatoes and saw how overwhelmingly bad the reviews are. So....I might change my mind. Or I might go tomorrow anyway.

I haven't seen Tideland, but that review is enough to make me put it on my netflix queue!

The Host was fantastic. Man it was good.

I'd be willing to see the new Jodie Foster along with that other movie about Angry White People Taking Revenge that maybe has Kevin Bacon or someone like that in it? Do you know what I'm talking about? I sense a year of angry white people movies. Happens every now and again.

You know my boner for Clive Owen is boundless, but The Invasion looks Soooooooo Bad. I haven't ever heard of that other one. I'll just re-watch The Croupier.

Casino Royale has some excellent Daniel Craig beefcake action. Totally perfect for what it is.

Also, will you write me a 1500 character long essay about what it means to be entering a profession? This is what I am trying to avoid by posting on lj. Ok, back to task, then I can go to the beach!

Clive Owen isn't in The Invasion, its Daniel Craig. Get your british hot dudes correct!! But yes, it looks pretty terrible, I'm just hoping its satisfying terrible, not makes-me-angry terrible. That Derailed movie made me angry.

When we saw the Jodie Foster preview, DYA was like, "she's sporting her 'Accused' haircut!" which is totally true and totally hilarious. It's also the same wig worn by Julia Roberts in Sleeping with the Enemy and Jennifer Lopez in Enough. Did you know there was a love theme from Enough? Do you know that my friend Ed in my writing group played cello in a performance of the love theme of Enough on an episode of Oprah? Its one of my favorite stories of all time.

1500 characters? Not words?? Strange. Just use a thesaurus and make sure you use the longest word possible to describe the most basic concepts on the topic. And talk something about history of medicine and being part of a classical art that dates back centuries, millenia even, and being honored to be trusted to become part of the club and also throw in something about 'beginner's mind' so you'll seem all humble and isht.

You have talked to me about the love theme from enough many times--I think that you may soon qualify as Jr. JLoologist.

Everything is in characters because it's easy to write the software for, and so everyone's essays will be equally short and meaningless. I got my favorite one today, which is "describe what you have been doing since you left school and what you will do in the next 12 months"--500 characters.

Do you know about this Kevin Bacon or somebody movie? I think we're in for another "falling down" kind of moment.
