On the elevator ride up to work, the mini-screen with flashing headlines mentioned Livejournal being sold to a "Russian media company".

Last night at 2:22 am, I woke myself up from trying to escape the bed and some weird freudian psychosexual dream. I hate those. I only get them maybe once a year, and last night was something about my mother sleeping with some other man and telling me about it, but worse she was telling me about it when the man's child was in the room with us. This was obviously influenced by the Margot movie. There was also some weird appearance with the Clintons and reference to Hillary sleeping with Obama and Bill talking about public sex and I was just like, agh, enough, I want out of these conversations! So I got up, was groggy, but also far from sleep. Perhaps not so inclined to return to the possible narrative awaiting me. I played my scrabble moves online, then went back to bed and did a crossword puzzle. Then I read. Then finally, around 4:30, I turned out the light and eventually fell back to sleep. I suspect DYA was maybe waking up around that time on the other side of the apartment.

A random bout of insomnia wouldn't be so bad with my schedule, except I had plans to meet Coxy at the Y at 8:45 am. The alarm went off and I made it happen. Even got there early! We scooted in just in time for our Hydro-Aerobics Class. This class was my suggestion and Coxy was totally game (and possibly equally excited, though I don't want to presume to speak for her). It was sort of exactly what I expected -- we were the youngest people in the class and we were definitely being observed and sized up, though it never felt hostile. Just...questioning. So imagine about 9 people in a pool, with my grandma standing on along the edge and calling out the exercises. It started off with going back and forth across the short distance of the pool, doing specifical leg or arm movements. Then we got these styrofoam dumbbells and she called out more movements for our arms. Then we got floatie noodles to recline in the water and she called out more movements for our legs. Then we went to the wall and did a bunch more movements. Then we did about 8 seconds of stretching and the class was done.

I actually liked the class a lot, because you could adjust all the movements easily, to make them as vigorous as you'd like. Its not swimming focused, in fact I wore my glass the whole time because I never went fully underwater -- its more about movement underwater so its easier on joints but there's also more resistance. It was sort of soothing being in water for an hour too.

After the class, Coxy stayed behind in the pool to do some laps and I went exploring the rest of the fitness area. I tried out a few machines, including the climber. For some reason elliptical machines are daunting, but I had no problem hopping up in this rail thing and climbing away for a couple minutes. Then I went to the circuit training room, which I haven't done in years, and I kinda love all the weightlight machines, even more than free weights. Except, I got all bold and did the assisted chin-up/chin-dip bar, and now my shoulders are jelly and I could barely lift my arms to get dressed for work this afternoon. I'm a little worried that tomorrow morning will be worse, though usually if the tiredness happens right away, I'm less sore the next day.

I liked being there, because I didn't feel as self-conscious about my body. I mean, its probably more likely people stare at my tattoo instead of my scars, since the ink is actually more prominent. The majority of the people there were older than me, there were all sort of body types and fitness styles, it wasn't too crowded and the people there were utterly fascinating to me. Also, they have machines with tvs on them. So, assuming they don't require a year commitment, I think I'm going to join the YMCA. Its 3 train stops away, and about 2 blocks from the station (it took me about 15 minutes to get there, door to door).

So maybe every Wednesday, Coxy and I are going to do water aerobics and then eat at the Golden Nugget and talk about things that make me agitated (in a good way).

I can't believe I'm joining a gym and super excited about it. I also can't believe I wrote a whole blog post about it. I don't expect it to happen that often. Except maybe after I go to the steam room for the first time.

My friend and I used to go to the Northwestern Water Aerobics class. It was great, lots of older women with cute skirt bathing suits.

Congratulations! Yay, Y!! My YMCA membership is my most prized possession next to my library card. It's fabulous how you can go to any of the Chicago and even suburban Ys (I'm not that far from Evanston, so I take tai chi and bellydancing up there). There are lots of classes and options.

Did you find the pool cold though? I tried doing water pilates at High Ridge Y, where my home membership is, and my teeth chattered through the whole thing. A nice thing about the Y too is you can join whichever one in town is cheapest and use it at any Y (don't think the prices are that different, but still. High Ridge was cheapest so i was lucky).

And on the dream front... There's psychosexual analysis in the air somewhere -- I totally had a Freudian dream last nite too, for the first time in a long time. Ugh. It was quite bizarre and gross, but the fractals in it were really cool. In the dream, I was by a swimming pool with my mom who told me my dad had some kind of infection that caused these weird fractal looking things to come out when came -- and when I looked around I saw these complicated crystal designs all around the pool area, with some attached fractal-looking virus. At least Hillary and Barack have not found their way into my dreams yet. Immediate family members are creepy enough!!

Hope to see you at the Y!

i didn't know you could go to any Y in the area with your membership! that's exciting. maybe you could meet there for hydro-aerobics! the pool was slightly heated, actually. not hot hot, but not cold either. or we could just workout separately and then get coffee/tea afterwards.

i had a dream 8 years ago about making out with my brother that i still remember and it still creeps me out to think about.

Hey, I'd love to meet at the Y to workout sometime. I can't quite manage the morning thing though -- I'm either at work or asleep.... But evenings and weekends usually work, if they ever do for you. Tmw I'm going to Lakeview Y around 10 pm.... The Hydro aerobics sounds pretty fab. I think you're right that being in the water would be soothing -- could use a little soothing... hmm, anyway, if you would like another workout buddy, I'd love to meet up at one of the Y's sometime. I've been meaning to check out the Irving Park one....

10 pm? Wow, I didn't realize they were open so late. I work in the evenings from 4 pm to 9 pm, but I'd be willing to meet you after work sometime -- I could get to the Lakeview Y by 9:30. Or perhaps I can persuade you to try the hydro-fitness class some morning, when you're feeling ambitious!

I think I'm going tomorrow to officially sign up and get my membership, so I could meet you this weekend or sometime next week. Maybe you could e-mail me directly with a few times that work for you and we'll set a date? fyi, the hydro-aerobics class at Irving Park is MWF at 9 am, and I'm planning to be there next Wednesday to meet my friend -- you could certainly join us. but having a gym buddy more than once a week is good too, to get me in the habit!

oh, and my e-mail is raymondboywonder @ yahoo

Is there a weird "sharing too much information with the kids" thing in your family, like in the movie? Or was that just in the dream?

Just in the dream. My family of origin problems are the exact opposite in real-life -- people don't say anything, ever. For example, I've never even 'officially' been disowned/rejected from the family. They just sort of stopped inviting me home to holidays, take weeks or months to return phone calls or e-mails, and never answer any questions I ask of them directly about their feelings. This is part of why its been 7 years and things have gotten worse for me, instead of better (up until recently), because its always like "oh give your parents time" and even they would occasionally say "we just need time" and so I've been waiting and waiting and waiting and finally I realized what a minute, this is like fcking Godot.

i love the YMCA just for that very reason -- no one judges or stares or ogles and everyone there is getting in shape. it's all very family-oriented and friendly. i might join that location too as you've inspired me to get off my arse. altho i did just buy a rowing machine so i can work out in my place but i don't have a steam room or a hot tub.

:)

I think that thing is scarier than the eliptical machines. More chance to fall off for me. I like the Y for its body-diversity as well. I may decide to join for the winter--I need to go over to the branch of the gym I joined that's on Piper's Alley and check it out--something tells me it'll be a lot of spandex and I'll be the sweaty fat kid. Which I guess means I will join the Y and we can go on Saturdays. I will report to you this Saturday.

Also, I love the assisted chin-up/dip. It makes much more sense to me to work muscles in concert rather than isolating them.

I belonged to a Y for a while and it was great. I loved water aerobics because it was me and a bunch of 50-70 year old ladies.
