I don't normally like to start my birthday in tears, but my father sent me an e-card with the above image, and his message said this:

To: Ray

Have a wonderful birthday. Maybe we'll have birthday cake together one day.

Love Always,
- Dad

He fcking called me Ray. I can't believe he fcking called me Ray. Wow. That's almost as good a gift as the PS2. Almost. Well, I suppose it's not really fair to compare the two.

In other good news, I'm wearing my dope new cholo shirt that Poet Friend got me for my birthday. MFHA stopped to compliment how good it looked, so it must be pretty stand out. I was planning to wear it today and tonight but decided instead to change back into my Neil-like sweater vest and save my shirt for the party on Saturday. Here's sort of what the shirt looks like, except it's cream and black, instead of that rust color shown here:

I didn't bring a lunch today because I was hoping someone would take me out for a meal. Is that presumptuous? I have my own cash if that doesn't happen. Or maybe I'll just gorge myself on cake that my co-workers will give me. I'm sure that will be great for my blood sugar.

Is it bad that I have a crush on one of [livejournal.com profile] limenal's law school friend? Maybe I'm just still thinking about the pasta she made with bacon and butter and onions and tomato. She also served a greens salad with nuts and goat cheese with a vinagrette. Throw in a couple beers and I was a happy happy boy for dinner last night.

I'm making myself hungry.

to be honest it feels sort of strange. almost, but not quite, wrong. like i feel i should be rejoicing and elated, but i don't want to trust the moment because i feel there's still so much ground to cover.

but at least it's the first step and those are important.

p.s. thanks for the bday wishes.

i think i know what you mean, a bit
i mean, my mom has just started calling me wyatt
granted, this didn't take nearly as long as i thought it would
but because we don't actually talk about anything
i don't know what she's really thinking about me, or about what i've told her so far...

but yes. take heart in the little things

I'd be in love with the law school friend too, after a meal like that. Yum.

Happy birthday! Did you get my text message? Did you get it? Huh? Huh?!

It's so awesome when your parents accept you for who you are, isn't it? My dad elicited the same response from me several times this year -- once with my birthday card addressed to "Son," once when he introduced me to his boyfriend as "My son, Griffen," and once just this morning when I got an email from him saying "Hi son, how are you doing?"

Accepting parents should be high on the list of Things To Have. :)

yeah, unfortunately i don't really have terribly accepting family members -- this is the first time in the year and a half since i came out to them as trans that he's addressed me as anything but my birthname. baby steps, I suppose.

but it gives me hope to see other people who's parents have managed to deal with the changes.
