In case you're wondering, I am alive.

Goonies gotta stick together.

The other day during a conversation in which I was discussing how old the kids in the first Harry Potter movie will look by the time they film the third, my stepfather interjected (in true missing-the-point form), "Well, that Elijah Wood just turned 21." Since I wasn't sure what that had to do with anything, I answered, "Yeah? But he's playing a hobbit or an elf or something. He's not playing a kid. Besides, even if he were supposed to look a certain age, he's pretty much not growing anymore. The kids in Harry Potter are. If age were at all an issue in Lord of the Rings, would they have cast Sean Astin? I mean, he's in his early to mid-30s."

This is where my mom came in: "Thirties?!? Sean Astin is pushing 40." Huh? I said, "Um, Mom? Sean Astin is 33—tops." She fought me. Of course, I went to IMDB to find that Sean Astin will be turning 32 in February and told my mom, "See? He's only a year and a half older than I am." Her response? "Really? Well, it feels like he's been around a lot longer than that."

It's good to know that my mom is less sick of me than she is of Sean, I guess.

Wow -- we had the same discussion about how old Sean Astin after seeing the Two Towers the other night and we thought he was in his "late" thirties, like 36 or 37. Then in my delirious state at 2 am after seeing said movie, I noticed the similarities between Sean and Joshua Jackson. I think I actually said it the other way around though -- Joshua Jackson is the Sean Astin of the 90's. Assuming Joshua Jackson goes on to make some lucrative fantasy franchise in 10 years.

If the Harry Potter movies get made every year, then I suppose it won't matter if the actors get older since the books take place in each year in school. Of course, this would depend on what's her name churning out the books once a year. But what do I know -- I haven't read any of them, seen the most recent movie, or read any magazine articles on the matter.
