In case you're wondering, I am alive.

Goonies gotta stick together.

The other day during a conversation in which I was discussing how old the kids in the first Harry Potter movie will look by the time they film the third, my stepfather interjected (in true missing-the-point form), "Well, that Elijah Wood just turned 21." Since I wasn't sure what that had to do with anything, I answered, "Yeah? But he's playing a hobbit or an elf or something. He's not playing a kid. Besides, even if he were supposed to look a certain age, he's pretty much not growing anymore. The kids in Harry Potter are. If age were at all an issue in Lord of the Rings, would they have cast Sean Astin? I mean, he's in his early to mid-30s."

This is where my mom came in: "Thirties?!? Sean Astin is pushing 40." Huh? I said, "Um, Mom? Sean Astin is 33—tops." She fought me. Of course, I went to IMDB to find that Sean Astin will be turning 32 in February and told my mom, "See? He's only a year and a half older than I am." Her response? "Really? Well, it feels like he's been around a lot longer than that."

It's good to know that my mom is less sick of me than she is of Sean, I guess.

Wow -- we had the same discussion about how old Sean Astin after seeing the Two Towers the other night and we thought he was in his "late" thirties, like 36 or 37. Then in my delirious state at 2 am after seeing said movie, I noticed the similarities between Sean and Joshua Jackson. I think I actually said it the other way around though -- Joshua Jackson is the Sean Astin of the 90's. Assuming Joshua Jackson goes on to make some lucrative fantasy franchise in 10 years.

If the Harry Potter movies get made every year, then I suppose it won't matter if the actors get older since the books take place in each year in school. Of course, this would depend on what's her name churning out the books once a year. But what do I know -- I haven't read any of them, seen the most recent movie, or read any magazine articles on the matter.

So I momentarily thought you were watching Lambada (the movie), then I realized that no one would willing submit themselves to and hour and a half of saving the rain forrest via the forbidden dance ...

BTW, I got your cd yesterday and I absolutely love it. Thank you so much. Outkast, Costello/Bacarach, L.Williams, Nas ... my musical tastes are either totally transparent or your one hell of a dj. Personally, I'd like to believe the second option (kinda' best for the both of us ...) Two questions:

1. What is the 3rd (or 4rth) song on the disc - after the track that's by (I'm guessing) The Donnas? Kind of a slow Joy Division-y rhtyhm thing ... kinda' sounds like Luscious Jackson ...
2. What is the Bacarach-ish tune before God Give Me Strength (which is one of my favorite tunes of all time, btw). A lady singing about how the world would be better if we all got love in the morning?

Anyways, thanks again. I hope you're enjoying your cd too and Happy New Year (in case I don't get another chance).

Preface: My employer has the greek letter "lambda" in the title, and we often get solicitors who call about "Lambada".

I'm glad you enjoy the CD and I'm quite pleased I was able to get a good handle on your taste! To answer your questions:

1. The track is by The Spinanes, a local Chicago band that put out a couple albums and split. Their album Arches & Aisles is amazing, and when I play is at my house, I can often re-enact the scene from High Fidelity when John Cusack sells the Beta Band album to several customers in the school. Anyway, the lead singer is named Rebecca Gates and she recently put out a solo album I like too.

2. "Just a Little Lovin" by Dusty Springfield. You NEED the album Dusty in Memphis. I promise you'll like it. I'll pay you back if you don't.

(I love your mix, by the way and listened to it several times at work! I'm sorry I forgot it on my trip....)

Happy New Year!

Ahhh ... I can't believe I didn't recognize Dusty. I bought Dusty in Memphis years ago and, of course, love it. However it's literally been years since I listened to it ... high time I got back to it.
