1. i can't bring myself to watch the video. i feel like it'll make me vom. 2. i'm coming to evanston for the holiday this week. i'm not sure how much time i'll have to see non-fam, but will you be around?
when are you getting here? i'm leaving town on thursday and coming back on monday. but maybe wednesday? i was thinking of going up to evanston to do a little copy work, maybe we could meet for lunch.
omg!!! i was thinking of you when i read that meat loaf article. because it's so circular, that the Meatloaf songwriter wrote it for Celine, but then regifted it back to Meat! did he think Meat wouldn't notice? that Celine video was all over VH1 and soft rock stations that summer.
I am so disgusted at the way that many of the commenters compare what Richards did to the comedy of folks like Chris Rock and other black comics. That was so blatantly vitriolic, with no comic or artistic value. Not to mention that the word n!&&8*r is an epithet so imbued with socio-historical power. I mean, you just can't compare it to "white" or even "cracker". I gotta say too that it says something sad about our society that people like Richards feel so emboldened to express such hateful nostalgia for socially acceptable racialized violence. ugh. I think I will be sick now.
I'm waiting for the headlines tomorrow about him checking into rehab. Which is perfect for everyone who is afraid of actually challenging the status quo that produced this event -- they can distance themselves from his actions as an anomaly, a symptom of a substance abuse problem, and not, you know, representative of the complete saturation of systemic racism. wait, that was redundant. but, also, accurate, it feels at time. like, on TOP of the built in oppression of society, there's extra racism heaped upon it.
also, my friend vfc has a good point about the media covering this event as "upsetting minorities". cause only 'they' get bothered by such things. the subtle perpetuation of it all, even in the midst of events that are graphically break through the surface.
i just heard a news teaser that they are going to broadcast his apology at 11. That's kind of rich, eh? I wonder if he thinks sorry is enough to fix this. I am almost intrigued enough to watch, but I'm more curious to see if Jon Stewart will mention it. Oh yeah, and I also have a five page book review due tomorrow.
