My previous post about oatmeal was popular. I would say "who knew?" except that's always how it is -- long introspective entries get no response, short ones instigate nothing short of ten. (I'm guilty of this too.) So anyway, a follow-up to steel cut oatmeal.
Yesterday I wasn't so keen on my breakfast, but then again, I made the mistake of doctoring it too dramatically by adding a tablespoon of flax seed and then honey. I forgot that I maybe don't like honey. And the flax seed soaked up all the moisture and caused it to end up burning and sticking to the pot. I ate it anyway.
Today I kept it simple. Halfway through I added a pat of butter, couple tablespoons of skim milk, a tablespoon of maple syrup, and a few shakes of salt. It tasted ok. But then I topped it off with raspberries and it was aMAzing. I tend to lean towards savory breakfasts, but not always, and if the right fruit is involved, I like sweet&salty together in the morning. My other hot breakfast cereal is some 814327 grain mix that I make and at the end add big dollops of peanut butter and strawberry jam (or apple sauce) and mix it up and it's like hot PBJ in a bowl. Ok, that sounds gross. But it's good.
In Other NewsTM, it has been confirmed that while I would have no-strings-attached sex with a guy who voted for Bush, I will not have it with a guy who's fatphobic. This is all concluded on thought experiments and past history, no current practices, as right now I'm primarily enjoying a chaste relationship with my new bedding.

However, I will foment about breakfast any day of the week. Today I had a roasted sweet potato with a bunch of salt. Not bad.

In other words, I haven't figured it out enough in my own head and heart to converse in a way that I feel would be productive to myself.

Date: 2006-12-08 04:57 pm (UTC)Cooking or heating flax seeds actually gets rid of most of the nutritional value of flax seed, so I add flax seed meal only once the oatmeal is in the bowl. However, my complaint about flax seeds is : EW! Mucilaginous! Mucus! Slime! EW! Why couldn't nature make something that healthy taste a little better?
I usually make my oatmeal with rice or almond milk instead of water, and add fresh fruit or a dollop of jam. Some maple syrup if I'm feeling very adventurous.

Date: 2006-12-09 05:58 pm (UTC)You have worked your lj magic and I must buy a feather bed now! Or two! I also have the amazon.com free prime special, for the second time! They gave it to me once before and I loved it, but not enough to pay eighty bucks a year. I am a fool for free fast shipping. They don't ship feather beds either. They do ship boxes of peanut noodles though should I wish to stock up.
xoxoxoxoxo.

Date: 2006-12-10 12:18 am (UTC)i will try your egg and salsa and yogurt method, as i am intrigued by the savory oatmeal. i imagine in this meal, it's a little like brown rice (which i like with fried egg and diced tomato and beans and cumin).
