My previous post about oatmeal was popular. I would say "who knew?" except that's always how it is -- long introspective entries get no response, short ones instigate nothing short of ten. (I'm guilty of this too.) So anyway, a follow-up to steel cut oatmeal.

Yesterday I wasn't so keen on my breakfast, but then again, I made the mistake of doctoring it too dramatically by adding a tablespoon of flax seed and then honey. I forgot that I maybe don't like honey. And the flax seed soaked up all the moisture and caused it to end up burning and sticking to the pot. I ate it anyway.

Today I kept it simple. Halfway through I added a pat of butter, couple tablespoons of skim milk, a tablespoon of maple syrup, and a few shakes of salt. It tasted ok. But then I topped it off with raspberries and it was aMAzing. I tend to lean towards savory breakfasts, but not always, and if the right fruit is involved, I like sweet&salty together in the morning. My other hot breakfast cereal is some 814327 grain mix that I make and at the end add big dollops of peanut butter and strawberry jam (or apple sauce) and mix it up and it's like hot PBJ in a bowl. Ok, that sounds gross. But it's good.

In Other NewsTM, it has been confirmed that while I would have no-strings-attached sex with a guy who voted for Bush, I will not have it with a guy who's fatphobic. This is all concluded on thought experiments and past history, no current practices, as right now I'm primarily enjoying a chaste relationship with my new bedding.

Can we have a conversation about self-destructive instincts in sexual attraction? We started it a while ago, but the last couple of days have been spent with me preoccupied with some really stupid shit.

Also, for me, when you post long introspective entries, sometimes the things I want to talk to you about are not things I want to bring up in a public/semi public forum.

However, I will foment about breakfast any day of the week. Today I had a roasted sweet potato with a bunch of salt. Not bad.

I wasn't trying to dig on anyone who commented about my steel-cut. I love the food talk!

I may or may not be able to have that conversation with you, as I tend to get defensive and hurt very easily about the topic of "bad" sexual choices, because of past history as well as the constant judgment that is instilled in most everyone about said topic, even when they are not maybe meaning to. In other words, I haven't figured it out enough in my own head and heart to converse in a way that I feel would be productive to myself.

Fair enough. It's obviously something that's on my mind. I think it bears repeating (though it's something that you know about me already, I think) that I don't believe in "bad" choices--every choice you make, you're getting something from it. I'm more interested in picking apart the things that are behind choices. Hello, welcome to my coping skill, which is looking at my own self destructive behavior as intellectually interesting.

Either way, if you want to bring it up in the future, please do.

I am a long adherent to the concept that the best food for breakfast is whatever you didn't eat for dinner the night before.

I didn't get a chance to tell you I also find Steel Cut Oats really sexy. But I do. Especially McCann's.

Cooking or heating flax seeds actually gets rid of most of the nutritional value of flax seed, so I add flax seed meal only once the oatmeal is in the bowl. However, my complaint about flax seeds is : EW! Mucilaginous! Mucus! Slime! EW! Why couldn't nature make something that healthy taste a little better?

I usually make my oatmeal with rice or almond milk instead of water, and add fresh fruit or a dollop of jam. Some maple syrup if I'm feeling very adventurous.

for real? damn. so i guess my adding a few tablespoons to my various baking ventures in order to increase health is sort of pointless?

You might still get fiber (which is part of why people put them in muffins) but I'm pretty sure it kills the Omega 3's which are my main reason for eating *gag* flax. Best to add the meal after baking.

I love hot mixed grain cereal with a little yogurt and jam. Or fruit! I love blueberries and soymilk, so anything that involves that combination is good in my book.

Man, now I want a do-over on this morning's breakfast.

The best oatmeal I ever had was made with coconut milk instead of water, and had dried coconut and frozen blueberries mixed in just before serving. Oh yeah, baby.

Go to overstock.com and buy 1000 thread count bedsheets. You'll never leave your bed.

I think my feelings about steel cut oatmeal are clear to long time readers but I support you in your quest for the perfect bowl. Mine is topped by a fried or poached egg and a dollop of salsa and plain yogurt, salt & pepper. Drink lots of coffee while eating.

You have worked your lj magic and I must buy a feather bed now! Or two! I also have the amazon.com free prime special, for the second time! They gave it to me once before and I loved it, but not enough to pay eighty bucks a year. I am a fool for free fast shipping. They don't ship feather beds either. They do ship boxes of peanut noodles though should I wish to stock up.

xoxoxoxoxo.

they DO ship feather beds. just only a select few brands. they also ship the pillows i bought....and the coffeemaker. and i'm tempted to buy a tv too, solely for the free shipping! ok, that's a fib, i was thinking of a new tv with my xmas bonus anyway, because ours makes everything green which is really bad when watching b&w movies.

i will try your egg and salsa and yogurt method, as i am intrigued by the savory oatmeal. i imagine in this meal, it's a little like brown rice (which i like with fried egg and diced tomato and beans and cumin).
