Ham, Potato and Chard Soup: At one point while steaming the swiss chard, the water was really really red and I got kinda excited that when I added the potatoes, it would be PINK SOUP. But it wasn't. Its just a regular stewy soup color and texture. Its somewhat tasty. Nothing amazing that I will be replicating exactly, but I might adjust it. I will eat this pot all and enjoy it. Plus there's lots of leafy greens in it, so it feels healthy, despite all the ham and ham broth.

Sweet Potato Spoon Bread: This wasn't the consistency I thought it would be at all. I thought it would be like bread pudding. This was more like twice-baked sweet potatoes with leeks sauteed in butter and goat cheese. Um, delicious. This I will be making again.

Bourbon Berry Pie: Its the best cobbler of my life. Which is a nice way of saying, I didn't adjust the thickener accordingly so its super super juicy and runny. Which means I am eating it all up with a spoon in a bowl. Even so, I'm proud of my first homemade pie crust. Mark Bittman did not fail me!

Speaking tangentially of food, [livejournal.com profile] dommeyourass saw a commercial the other day where a group of guys travel to the next town over to eat Popeye's because there isn't one near them. I think someone at their ad agency was reading our blogs about Chick-Fil-A.

You should really photograph your creations. Since I got pretty seriously into culinary creation adventures, I've been photographing most of mine. Despite the conventional wisdom that home food photography makes it look awful, mine have come out really well. I've gotten tons of compliments on just how my food looks. Plus I wanna see what you're doing!
Keep it up!

i have a confession. in austin, there were several Chick-fil-a's and as much as I talked about how much i love them, we didn't go. it was sad. i had fun there anyways! next time, i promise, i will bring back a huge bag from Austin, because nothing says "i love you" more than chick-fil-a sandwiches!

ha i just saw that popeyes commercial yesterday and it reminded me of reading about your chick-fil-a excursions.

i'm more a sonic man myself, but can't quite commit to driving to champaign or davenport just for fast food, tasty though it is.

actually, its quite the opposite -- i'm touched you didn't eat there without us. i couldn't necessarily make the same promise!

but i wouldn't turn down a bag of chick-fil-a sandwiches either.

I did take a photo of the pie while it was cooling (lattice crust, suckers!!!) but didn't have time to upload and post. maybe later! I should have photographed the sweet potato, it was pretty, but I was so hungry at that point I just wanted to eat.

Yeah, it's not as special when you don't drive 120 miles to get it.

PS. That one you and brook brought me, the one I stuck in the fireplace....it was DELICIOUS. The bread toasted through the wrapper.

i used the same recipe you recommended -- i found the book on google books and copied it! haha. except i messed up and got leeks instead of shallots at the store (because i forgot to check the recipe before going), but it worked.

ah, now that was the moment to add beetroot. or beets, as your people call them. even one will make it as pink as you could ever desire.
